How we helped drive world-first legislation change to protect Australian teens.
We showed the world that just 36 months could save a life.
Social media is directly linked to our youth mental health epidemic. But, while there have been many attempts to change the age of social media citizenship, in the face of big tech platforms influence, none have been effectively implemented.
And so, rather than taking on big tech platforms on their terms, we rallied an un-ignorable chorus of voices - from parents to politicians - and shifted the conversation from privacy to health, creating a movement designed to create genuine change. In November 2024, the legislation was successfully passed with bipartisan support, lifting the age of social media citizenship in Australia from 13 to 16.
We didn’t just successfully change legislation to help Australian teens. we created a successful blueprint for other countries to do the same. More and more countries are reaching out to find out how they can adopt similar models to take on harmful tech platforms.
